Matfield Green Consortium for Place-based Education

Location

Salina, Kansas

History

A program of two nonprofit organizations: the Rural Schools and Community Trust (makes grants to and works with place-based educational programs in over 700 rural elementary and secondary schools) and the Land Institute (founded in 1976 by Wes Jackson to pioneer Natural Systems Agriculture). A three-year program now in its second year.

Mission

This program combines the missions of both organizations. It "translates this body of knowledge and view of the world (espoused by the Land Institute) into instructional programs for students and ways of fostering sustainable communities. Making the work of the Land Institute accessible to students, teacher, and community leaders holds great promise for fundamental reform in both education and agriculture."
