Types of Programs Offered

Many types of publishing. The World As Home is an important contribution to the field of sense of place literature. Its mission is:

The World As Home, the nonfiction publishing program of Milkweed Editions, is dedicated to exploring the ethical, cultural, and esthetic dimensions of our relationship to the natural world. In conjunction with our website, www.worldashome.org, which strives to connect literary writing about the natural world (from Milkweed and other publishers and publications) with ecoregionally-based environmental activism, The World As Home features two series, Credo and Literature for a Land Ethic, as well as other titles by new writers and reprints of classic or under-recognized works of nature writing, the program will be a forum for distinctive literary writing that not only alerts the reader to environmental issues but offers personal testimonies to living harmoniously with other species in urban, rural, and wilderness communities.

The World As Home website:

The World As Home website, sponsored and maintained by nonprofit literary press Milkweed Editions, fosters ecological literacy and renewal by linking literary writing about the natural world to specific ecoregions and to organizations active in preserving natural landscapes or focused on the art of writing. Designed as a comprehensive resource for writers, educators, and activists, the site includes nonfiction, fiction, and poetry from Milkweed and other publishers and publications. The worldashome.org home page is a revolving feature of publications, organizations, and writing gathered around a theme, topic, or occasion. Changing frequently, the home page suggests the kind of fertile linkage between literature and activism that inspires the whole site, and that we hope sets a tone for browsing via the ecoregion map.

Ecoregional map and literature. Literature series called Stories from Where We Live addresses ecoregional stories which link to teaching materials.
