History

Mission

· Students were constantly challenged and supported to do their very best work; to perform at higher levels than they ever thought possible?

· Teachers were similarly challenged and supported to do their very best work; to learn and practice new ways of helping their students discover the excitement of learning as well as acquire the knowledge and skills needed for success?

· Studying history, literature, science and mathematics was as exciting, challenging and rigorous as participating in an Outward Bound wilderness expedition?

· Dimensions of character such as tenacity, initiative, courage and compassion were considered to be as important as the development of students. intellectual abilities?

· New York City itself were transformed into a giant classroom, with its neighborhoods, parks and waterways, cultural and commercial institutions, and most of all, its people, treated as rich learning resources?

· What was required of students in school mirrored what is called for in the workplace and other real life situations: the ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources, to solve complex problems, to make persuasive presentations, and to work both independently and with other members of a group?
