Literary England

Romantics, Writers and Ruins

May 25 - June 1, 2002

Our first international adventure!

We're going to spend a week in England exploring the literary landscape. Among the places we'll go are:

Tintern Abbey in Wales, to see if we, too, can wander lonely as a cloud...

The Hundred Acre Wood, to play our own game of Pooh Sticks on the original Pooh Sticks Bridge.

Stratford-upon-Avon, for a visit to the bard's house, Anne Hathaway's cottage, and a night at the theatre.

Binsey, for a visit to Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the rabbit hole.

Oxford, for a full Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, and Kenneth Grahame tour (the Grahame tour will include a little "mucking about in boats" along the Cherwell in the spirit of ol' Rat and Mole)

London, for lots of good things including a look at Dickens' London.

Price: You'll need to plan ahead to try and find a cheap airfare. There are many discount student rates which can sometimes make the cost very reasonable. Once you're here it'll cost roughly 50 dollars a day for food, accomodations and admissions to things - A clearer price will come in the months ahead when we know how many folks are coming.

Once you're on this side of the Atlantic, you might consider getting a Eurail Pass and doing a little visiting of Europe. From England it is very easy to access all of Europe and North Africa...

(Trips to England make great graduation presents for the jobless English major!)
