Medieval Manhattan

Our very first Road Scholars trip...it set the mood for all that was to follow!
Our guiding questions for the day centered around what was the ruling paradigm of the Medieval period and what is the ruling paradigm of ours. Using Manhattan's Medieval resources was a wonderful way to ask those questions.
We began our day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and had a great introduction to tapestries and treasuries, knights in armor and holy molars. Leaving the Met we dined up by the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where we passed the second part of our day. There we explored a modern working cathedral and asked questions about what roles can the cathedrals of the Medieval Period play in our world today. The poetry wall filled with the words of prisoners from around the country proved to be an evocative answer to that question.
We ended our day up at the Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park. We had hardly gotten past tapestries and tombs when we ran out of time...giving us a very good excuse to go back.
